The Psychologist, the Neuroscientist and the Educationalist ride again – five years of EP3

By David Butler Education for all 24 Jul 2019

The EP3 seminar is now in its 5th year and for the first time we are taking it to beautiful Brisbane, Queensland. EP3 has allowed Lorimer and me to get together and teach once a year and to invite world leaders from varied related disciplines to join us. Looking back at the EP3 alumni, I can admit to a small amount of pride in helping to bring such an A-list cast to a local and global audience of dedicated clinicians, researchers and students. We have had  psychologists Mark Jensen, Frank Keefe and Kevin Vowles from the USA, and our own locally grown* pain immunologist Mark Hutchinson, and physiotherapist Peter O’Sullivan.  We have had the neuroscientists Bob Coghill from the USA and Giando Iannetti  from the UK. This year we have the Belgian psychologist Johan Vlaeyen, world renowned for his work on learning pain and fear of pain.

Nothing else quite like it

I don’t think there is anything quite like EP3 out there. Our attendees are multidisciplinary and nearly all are clinicians.  Three days allows deep reflection, time for delegates to meet the speakers and ask questions, and perhaps most importantly, time for the speakers to really go deep into their content and provide meaningful and applicable treatment strategies. We ask all speakers to present by answering the question “what are you currently thinking and doing” so while we have a broad outline for the programme, we are always open to last minute changes if something juicy comes up. This has given each EP3 their unique buzz and the last four EP3s have really rocked!

Unadulterated science and clinical content

We don’t seek or accept (many have tried) sponsorship from drug companies, or businesses pushing the latest in ‘therapeutic’ devices, braces, gizmos, or the next hot colour in sports tape. This frees us to provide unadulterated basic sciences and clinically relevant content. It also means you are not bombarded with smartly suited marketing professionals throwing branded pens and notepads at you during lunch!

EP3 is ideal for anyone interested in pain. We make no assumptions about qualifications or past experience, but do promise that some of the material will push you to think harder and deeper about the problems of pain, stress and suffering.

Look for the initial programme out next week.
