Are you even listening to me? A Pain Story

By Noigroup HQ Pain Stories 16 Feb 2022

Creating your own Pain Stories helps to illustrate Target Concepts – key ideas helpful for everyone to understand pain. Here’s one that we prepared using the Target Concept:
– Pain relies on context.

Are you even listening to me?

We’ve all had those conversations when the other person is looking at their phone while we’re talking. Grunting or nodding at the right moment to make it appear as though they are listening. Probe a little deeper, and you often find they barely remember what you were saying!

We have physiological systems that act in a similar manner. They suppress the noise. We call them ‘inhibitory mechanisms’, and they include conditioned pain modulation, whereby a painful stimulus acts like the mobile phone and distracts or suppresses the noise from another noxious (previously painful) stimulus.

It is this suppression of noise for someone experiencing ongoing pain that can be the window of opportunity required to realise there is hope for improving and active treatment strategies that can help with this.
