2016 – what a year

How has your DIM/SIM balance been?

Get ready – whether you love them or hate them, the avalanche of 2016 look backs and year in reviews will soon be invading our screens and pages. As we reflect on the past 12 months at NOI HQ, we all agree that it has certainly been a year to challenge our collective DIM/SIM balance – we lost many (too many) greats, and it felt like the news was dominated by disaster, animosity and divisive world events.

How has 2016 been for you? Did you notice a difference in your clinic or life? Was 2016 a year of more DIMs and pain for your patients or you? Did you have to work harder to find SIMs? While the end of year reflection is a bit clichéd, the events of 2016 do provide an opportunity to consider the impact that local, and global, societal context has on our experiences of pain, health, and wellbeing.

Bring on 2017 – it’s going to be big

After a tumultuous 2016, like many of you, we’re looking forward to ushering in 2017. In fact, we’re super excited – here’s why:

Explain Pain Supercharged
2017 will see Explain Pain Supercharged finally let out into the wild – David and Lorimer’s magnum opus represents a huge leap forward in the Explain Pain revolution and we can’t wait to get it into the hands of clinicians. We’ll tell you all about when it’s released and how to get your hands on it as soon as we can, but for now, maybe just clear some space on your desk!

Come and learn with NOI

NOI courses are getting bigger and better all around the world, and after three sell-out EP3 conferences in Australia and the US, and our best year yet of attendance at Explain Pain, Graded Motor Imagery and Mobilisation of the Neuroimmune System courses in the UK, Europe, Canada, the US and Australia, the global NOI faculty is bursting with fresh ideas and new content to share in 2017.

More than ever before, we want NOI courses in 2017 to be a chance to get together with like-minded people and learn from each other. We have always aimed for NOI courses to be the beginning, not the end point, of a learning journey and with the updated content combined with the release of Explain Pain Supercharged, we’re very confident that 2017 is going to be educationally huge!

Check out where to join us in the big list of 2017 courses below.

A cup of kindness

From everyone here at NOI, we want to wish you a safe and happy holiday season. We hope that you get a chance to reflect, but also refresh and recharge, as you prepare for the New Year. And as the clock ticks over to 12:00am 1 January 2017, and you try to remember whether you’ve ever really known the lyrics to Auld Lang Syne, just remember the most important line, perhaps more appropriate for the year ahead than ever

‘And we’ll take a cup of kindness yet,

For Auld Lang Syne’

See you in 2017!

David Butler and team, thank you for your help this year, more SIMs next year. Have a merry Christmas and Happy new year. Roger Blackford (the bilby gift)

  2. Thanks Team NOI.

I concur. On a much brighter note, I still remember attending my first NOI course and conference (circa 2009/2010) and knew I had found a ‘home,’ as well as full ‘psyche’ to commit to an MSc.

In a clinical pain context, the post does raise the issue of mixed emotions. As it’s the end of year, I will keep it brief by sticking to abstracts!

    1. Larsen JT , Statsny BJ. It’s a bittersweet symphony: simultaneously mixed emotional responses to music with conflicting cues. Emotion. 2011 Dec;11(6):1469-73.
    https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/21707144

    2. Larsen JT1, McGraw AP, Mellers BA, Cacioppo JT. The agony of victory and thrill of defeat: Mixed emotional reactions to disappointing wins and relieving losses. Psychol Sci. 2004 May;15(5):325-30.
    https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/15102142

Based on these references; my 2017 NOI discussion ‘wish list’ would be mixed/simultaneously contrasting emotion/appraisal in the context of predictive/processing, placebo/nocebo and the potential concept of appraisal ‘neutrality,’ for want of a better term!
