Stephen Morrison

Dr. Morrison has been working with the chronic pain population for over a decade. After graduating with his Doctorate in Physical Therapy from Georgia State University (2011), he moved across the country for the Kaiser Permanente Orthopedic Physical Therapy Residency Program (2012), following this with the Kaiser Permanente Spine Rehabilitation residency (2013), ultimately becoming a board-certified specialist in Orthopedic Physical Therapy soon after.

It was during this time that he grew interested in working with persistent pain overall and the intersection of culture and pain specifically.  Coming from a diverse background, and then having the opportunity to work with the highly diverse population of West Los Angeles, he began to see firsthand how minority populations are underserved through a mix of ineffectively targeted interventions and poor patient/provider relationship, often despite the best intentions of the provider.

Through voracious review of the emerging literature and consultation with some of the world’s foremost experts on pain, Dr. Morrison has been hard at work on exploring how to train providers to dismantle the barriers that create the “culture clash” leading to poor patient outcomes for minority groups.

Dr. Morrison currently practices at Kaiser Permanente West Los Angeles, where he specializes in the persistent pain population and trains clinicians as a preceptor for the Orthopedic Residency and the Persistent Pain Fellowship.  In 2018, he was certified by the University of South Australia at Adelaide in Pain Science.

Having grown up in Memphis, Tennessee, Dr. Morrison is now a full-convert to the Southern California lifestyle.  He enjoys the beach life (safely from the shore, there are sharks out there), spending time with his wife, and chasing down their energetic, young son.
