Johan Vlaeyen
Johan is a world renowned health psychologist with numerous international awards. A Professor at the Universities of Leuven and Maastricht, Johan’s experimental work includes studies on the ways people acquire pain-related fear and disability and what clinicians can do about it. He helped develop the fear-avoidance model of chronic pain and is a co-author of Pain Related Fear: Exposure based Treatment of Chronic Pain (IASP Press 2012). Johan throws a wide professional net; his work also embraces other chronic bodily symptoms such as tinnitus and fatigue. He is right into translational research and he and his team have developed fear reduction treatments for chronic pain and tinnitus.
