We’ve been listening to your feedback and have developed this course based on what clinicians around the globe are asking for. This course focuses on deepening your conceptual understanding of pain and the human experience and translating that deep understanding into your clinical world – taking you further from knowing what, to knowing how. You will bring your clinical and theoretical expertise into the virtual classroom where together we will deconstruct real life case studies of complex pain presentations using Explain Pain principles. We won’t be just talking about pain education, you will be doing it, and receiving feedback and help from your peers.
This will be a highly interactive experience and will require weekly reflection outside of the classroom as our case studies change and you are faced with further complexities, much like in the clinic. By using a framework of the trusted Protectometer we will dig deep into the patient experience of pain, their world and perspectives, and how they exist under their current limitations. You will have a tribe of like-minded clinicians to ponder ideas, challenge barriers and learn from differing perspectives throughout this four week course. In addition we hope you will generate valuable long term professional relationships beyond this formal teaching period. It takes a village, both for the clinician and the pain sufferer. We will address sticky clinical conversations, resistance to change, and managing expectations (both of our own and our patients). We will discuss being comfortable with the uncomfortable on both sides of the therapeutic relationship. Be prepared to get uncomfortable with each other as we tackle elephants in the therapeutic room and our own barriers to executing confidence when explaining pain in the clinic.
In order to attend Explain Pain Applications, you will need to be a health professional who has attended an Explain Pain course in the last 5 years, and who maintains and has deepened their interest in pain science and educational interventions.
We will be using an online platform to access a wider support community around the globe with the potential to access more varied experiential learning from your peers.
By the end of this course, participants will have:
- Explored the application of Explain Pain concepts for individuals experiencing complex, persistent pain states.
- Practiced developing treatment strategies for persistent pain that include educational approaches that are tailored to the individual.
- Developed the skills to flexibly address the dynamic clinical situation that persistent pain presents
- Delivered examples of tailored pain education components to their peers and received constructive feedback.
- Reflected on their own beliefs and approaches towards persistent pain and recognised the effect of these in clinical settings
- Identified opportunities for further personal growth and development in the treatment of problem pain states

Rachael is an Australian Physiotherapy Association Titled Pain Physiotherapist operating out of her private pain clinic, Evolving Pain, in Melbourne, Australia. Noigroup welcomes Rachael to the teaching team, presenting Explain Pain and Explain Pain Applications courses in 2021.
Rachael’s fascination for pain and the study of the mind and body began in her early years as a ballet dancer and as a person with a lived experience of pain. She followed this deep interest into the human throughout her formal university studies majoring in Neurophysiology (Bachelor of Science) and Psychology (Bachelor of Arts), before completing a Masters of Physiotherapy in 2007 with Sydney University.
Rachael’s clinical time in Ghana, West Africa in 2007 emphasised the importance of using education to deliver sustainable healthcare practises around the world, and highlighted the vast cultural and environmental influencers which contribute to human experiences, particularly in the context of pain and trauma.
Rachael has enjoyed sharing her love of education and science through her teaching role to health science students at LaTrobe University, and guest lecturing in Pain and Performance at the University of Melbourne.
Rachael has been involved in presenting pain concepts at various Australian conferences and is looking forward to her upcoming involvement as a clinician in an NHMRC clinical trial Explaining Pain to Increase Physical Activity in KNEE osteoarthritis (EPHIPHA-KNEE).
Outside of her clinical and teaching worlds Rachael enjoys African drumming and trips to the Zoo with her beautiful family.
