Explain Pain
The Explain Pain seminar is based on David Butler and Lorimer Moseley's book Explain Pain. The presenters will help you understand how the pain system works when there are injured tissues and nerves, and what happens in the brain in relation to pain experiences. You will also hear about the impact of stress in relation to pain. The seminar is delivered in a way in which any professional working with patients or clients in pain can utilise.
Neuroscience can be fun. You'll be introduced to the newest knowledge about pain 'neurotags', 'brain ignition nodes', zinging and zapping nerves, smudging in the brain and backfiring nerves. You will learn about how the immune, sympathetic and cortisol systems can be critical in pain experiences.
The provision of pain knowledge to patients is an effective evidence based treatment tool. Patients can understand far more than most health professionals realise. The therapeutic tools taught on this course are educating patients about how they can use their pain in an effective way, even if it is 'in their head', graded exposure to stimuli which evoke pain and also included are virtual body exercises - exercise your synapses not just your muscles.

Current Concepts in Pain Sciences and Rehabilitation
The last few years have seen rapid advances in our understanding of the biological processes that underpin pain in general, and chronic pain in particular. This seminar will provide an overview of clinically-important aspects of these advances from an internationally renowned clinical pain scientist, Dr Lorimer Moseley. The seminar will centre on five key points: (i) humans, like every other animal, are highly skilled at protecting themselves from threat, (ii) pain is the conscious correlate of an implicitly perceived threat to body tissue, (iii) when pain persists, the systems that underpin it change in structure and function, (iv) rehabilitation that targets these changes reduces pain and disability in people with chronic pain syndromes. The format of the course will be lectures on Day 1 and case studies/practical implications on Day 2. Although the course is designed to 'stand alone', it is a logical progression from "Explain Pain" or "CRPS" seminars.

Explicando A Dor

Neurodynamics & the Neuromatrix
This lecture, practical and interactive course is all about neurones. It is about how movements of the nervous system and activation of brain representations of the movements, plus some therapeutic neuroscience education can provide a potent therapy for many persistent pain states.
The course creates assessment and management strategies based on advanced neurodynamics and neuroscience education. You will learn about clinical utilisation of the neuromatrix paradigm, immune links to pain, some stress sciences, homuncular refreshment techniques and virtual body exercises. You will learn how to talk about "pain in the head" in a therapeutic way. Updated active and passive neurodynamic techniques, focusing on the upper limb, thorax, spinal cord, and nerve root will be taught, and their place in both peripheral and central sensitisation will be emphasised.
Lots of practicals, lots of interaction, cutting edge neuroscience...and you will have fun learning!
Course Aims
- To introduce the neuromatrix paradigm
- To review and update the neurodynamic tests for the upper body
- To place the neurodynamic tests in a framework of peripheral and central sensitivity
- To provide the basis of therapeutic neuroscience education
